Hippeastrum Papilio - The Butterfly Amaryllis

Add to Wishlist

One of the parents of the modern Hippeastrum hybrids, this species from Brazil is a true gem amongst bulb plants.  Extremely hardy, will grow in all climates from cold to tropical, will do well as a garden plant or in pots indoors.

Flowers appear from autumn to spring when plant is in growth.  In tropical climates foliage remains all year and flowers appear on tall upright stems in bunches of 2 to 4 and each bulb can be produced up to 3 times a year on older plants.

Bulbs are flowering size at 3 years but full maturity occurs at 6 or more years of age.  Offsets are freely produced on older plants and will eventually form a clump of mature flowering plants.
